Hands & Voices Update

A wonderful and diverse group of parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children have met twice and have currently filled out the chapter application for the Hands & Voices. The application has been mailed in and we anticipate approval for a chapter in Indiana.  Then, the committee will brainstorm ways we can carry out the Hands and Voices mission throughout Indiana.

The “start-up” committee has 10 parents.  A quick review for some of you, Hands and Voices, www.handsandvoices.org, is a parent-driven, parent-lead, parent-focused, and parent-empowered group that will provide directives on the educational and social/emotional aspects of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.  If any parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, support people, friends, and providers are interested in being on the “mailing list”, please send an email to Hands&Voices@isfd.state.in.us.

Indiana’s Chapter of Hands & Voices Travels to Columbus

On Tuesday evening, October 26, 2004, Jodee Crace gave an hour presentation to the parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their providers about the “upcoming” Hands and Voices chapter in Indiana.  The specific focus of the presentation was  on the mission, values, and goals of Hands and Voices as well as what Indiana has accomplished thus far.  There was a “preview” of what Indiana would like to see happen in the near future with the parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.  This presentation was the result of  interest in setting up a support group for parents in the Bloomington area. Thanks to Jay Cherry, regional audiologist,  for inviting us! If you are interested in members of the Hands & Voices start-up committee presenting in your area, contact Jodee Crace, Chair, at Hands&Voices@sisfd.state.in.us
